Knucklehead Studios

PAUL KNEBEL
Upon graduation he started a freelance photography business and began working with world renown sculptor Duane Hanson. After meeting Wesley Wright in late '74, he began managing and running sound with a few of Wes’ groups over the next year or two. About that time he was introduced to David Hardy at Knucklehead Studios, as well as marring local musician Connie Peterson.
Still working as a photographer, shooting for a few South Florida Bands and the '78 pre-tour promo photos for The Association, he was spending an increasing amount of time on the actual music side of things doing more live sound. After sitting in on a few recording sessions with Johnnie Sambataro his interest gravitated toward studio recording. His initial ‘training’ came at Knucklehead Studios. He has previously stated the three biggest personal influences in his recording career were Sambataro, who had hooked him up with Karl Richardson at Criteria (who in turn connected him with Steve Klein), Steve Klein, his mentor at Criteria, and Dave Hardy at Knucklehead Studios who kind of started it all. After some time training at Criteria, Paul had a very brief stint working for Mike Vetro, at his Ft. Lauderdale studio. Disagreements with Vetro quickly ended that association and in 1979 he opened his own studio, Sandpiper Sound, located in Broward.
Sandpiper lasted nearly four years, closing in 1982. By early ‘83 he and his then wife, Connie Peterson of Shanti, left the music business to pursue careers in the visual arts. He has worked as a photographer ever since, with fashion industry employers such as Ralph Lauren and Jennesee. But the bulk of the photographic work over the last three decades has still been shooting musicians.
